agent gerardo hernandez. his heartbroken wife saying he was proud to work for the tsa. and in tribute tonight, lights in tsa blue as you approach l.a.x. airport. meanwhile, inside the term terminals, remnants of the chaos. the mountains of luggage left behind by passengers ordered to flee as the shots rang out. our coverage tonight begins with abc's david wright at l.a.x., where he's been since the start. >> go, go, go! >> reporter: moments before all this, paul ciancia arrived at l.a.x. like a passenger, dropped off by someone driving a black hyundai. the criminal complaint filed saturday in federal court describes a cold-blooded attack. it says video surveillance showed ciancia walking up to the tsa checkpoint in terminal three, pulling a smith and wesson assault rifle out of his bag and firing multiple shots at point blank range at a tsa officer. then, it says, as he proceeded up the escalator, he looked back at the wounded officer, who in video appeared to move, and returned to shoot the officer again, killing him. the fbi says ciancia gunned down two more tsa officers as he shot

shot tsa officer gerardo hernandez at point-blank range, sending passengers in the security screening area running for cover. investigators say then ciancia went up an escalator but after apparently spotting hernandez still moving on the floor, he doubled back to shoot him again, killing hernandez. >> there was a pause, and so i looked down the escalator and i saw the gunman, he had his gun trained on the guy on the wall there and he shot him twice. >> reporter: in the end, two more tsa officers and a traveler were hit. l.a.x. police shot ciancia several times in the face and neck. he's alive but in his condition, he remains unresponsive. earlier friday morning, ciancia sent his family in new jersey rambling text messages. a woman who says she knows him says ciancia said he was going to commit suicide. the family alerted authorities, who then asked lapd to do a welfare check. if only police had gotten to his place just 45 minutes earlier, they might have stopped the rampage. but ciancia was already gone. he demanded a ride to the airport from one of his roommates. cnn's miguel marquez

suspect. we learned about the man who police say he shot and killed yesterday. that is 39-year-old gerardo hernandez. he was a tsa agent. in fact, he was the first tsa agent ever shot and killed in the line of duty. he was also the father of two. at the same time we are learning more about the gunman. police say 23-year-old paul ciansio pulled out a rifle and started shooting. >> shooting was on the left-hand side from where we heard the gun shot. it was horrible, you know. it was vietnam all again. >> authorities say it could have been worse. that's because he was found with more than 100 rounds left when he was finally taken into custody. witnesses think he was targeting tsa agents. they say he walked up to them, asked them if they were working for tsa. when he was taken into custody he had a had written note that said he wanted to harm tsa agents. he is from new jersey. apparently earlier in the week he texted his brother in new jersey saying he wanted to try to kill himself. authorities looking into that. he was shot before taken into custody, but he is still alive and they are trying
